PFAS testing for potatoes, vegetables and fruit

Would you like to know whether your potatoes, vegetables or fruit contain PFAS? This test allows you to have a sample analysed by Normec Groen Agro Control. You will receive a laboratory report showing the results for the PFAS substances tested.

The test is suitable for people who want more information about their produce, including vegetables and fruit grown in a home garden or allotment.

What does this test tell you?

The analysis measures the PFAS substances included in the laboratory’s testing panel in your submitted sample. Your report lists the substances tested and their results.

The results apply to the sample you submit. A result for potatoes does not automatically apply to your lettuce, apples or entire garden. Results may also vary between growing locations and harvests.

This is a PFAS test, rather than a complete assessment of all possible contaminants or food safety factors.

How much produce should I send?

Send 1 kilogram of a single type of potato, vegetable or fruit. For example, send only potatoes, only carrots or only apples.

Do not mix different types. Each test analyses one type of produce. If you would like separate results for several types, contact us about arranging multiple analyses.

If the results do not provide enough information for a clear consumption recommendation, this will be explained along with the next steps.

What do the values mean?

For potatoes, vegetables and fruit, European indicative levels identify when further investigation into contamination is recommended. These levels do not determine whether produce is safe or unsafe to eat.

A result below an indicative level is therefore not a complete food safety guarantee. If a result has a “<” symbol, the concentration is below the laboratory’s reporting limit. This does not necessarily mean that no PFAS is present.

Which products can I test?
This test is intended for potatoes, vegetables and fruit. Contact us before ordering if you would like to test a different food product.

Which PFAS substances are tested?
The substances tested are listed in your laboratory report. If you want to check whether a particular substance is included, contact us for the current substance list.

How much should I send?
Send 1 kilogram of a single type of potato, vegetable or fruit. Follow the instructions included with your kit.

Can I send several different vegetables or fruits in one sample?
Do not mix different types. A mixed sample would not show which individual type contributed to a measured result. Contact us if you would like several types tested separately.

Should I wash or peel my sample?
Follow the instructions included with your kit. Preparation affects what is being tested. If you specifically want washed or peeled produce analysed, discuss this with us before sending your sample.

How should I package my sample?
Place the entire sample in the supplied PFAS-free bag, securely close it with the cable tie and place it in the shipping packaging. Attach the supplied return label and drop off the parcel at a PostNL service point.

Can I test produce bought in a shop?
Contact us before ordering to confirm whether the product is suitable and how to collect the sample.

Does the test also include pesticides, heavy metals or TFA?
Do not assume that these analyses are included in a PFAS test. Contact us about the appropriate testing package if you want other substances measured.

Does “not detected” mean my produce is PFAS-free?
No. It means that the substance was not detected above the relevant analytical limit. Smaller amounts may still be present. The results also apply only to the substances tested.

Can the results tell me whether I can eat my produce?
The results provide information about the PFAS substances tested. Use the special link in your confirmation email to upload your report and receive an explanation of what the findings mean for consumption. If further assessment is needed, this will be indicated.

Do the results apply to my entire garden?
No. The results apply to the submitted sample. Other crops, growing locations or harvests may give different results.

Does this test also measure PFAS in my soil?
No. Soil requires a separate analysis. Testing produce does not replace a soil test.

When will I receive my results?
The usual analysis time is 10 working days after the laboratory receives your sample. Your report will be sent by email.
